Thanks, Mary, for sharing the project's details with us. From your description and from the comment left by Carla, it sounds fascinating.

What caught my attention in Carla's comment, "As you said, this project proved really challenging since it blends writing, multimedia literacy and intercultural communication" was the multidimensional aspect of this project and its "added value" - it addition to being a language learning exercise, she points out the other aspects (m literacy, int comm, and creativity) that the students were exposed to doing.

I wrote about creativity on my other blog http://www.monitorhypothesis.typepad.com/
after I had listened to Ron Carter's talk at the TESOL Seattle conference. Creativity, multimedia, literacy - that's what I love about using technology in language learning!

Dear Mary,

I'm delighted to know you are sharing the LwC Cartoon Festival Project with the SMiELT group. The project was born in our LwC community in July 2006 after Graham Stanley sent us a cartoon he prepared with Zimmer Twins for the Blogging Workshop.

I just mentioned we could have a Brazil-Argentina Festival for our blog exchange with Carla A's school in Brasilia and Hala suggested we should make it international. So I started the blog and the rest is history.... it's all there. All the comments, suggestions, contributions and decisions. It was not only a collaborative process for students, but for teachers as well.

So far more than 10 teachers have worked on the project but the first year they were all from Brazil and Argentina, so I was thrilled when you wanted to join us since you are such a fantastic partner and your students added a new cultural dimension to the festival.

At the computer lab we devised a set of preparatoty activities to scaffold the process and in 2007 we decided to have students edit the script and publish the movie on the wiki itself.

As you said, this project proved really challenging since it blends writing, multimedia literacy and intercultural communication. We still have a lot to learn and improve, but the great news is that we can enhance and re-define it together.

Big hugs from Argentina,
Carla R.
